My Culinary Delight of June

A lot of people who garden stop enjoying its bounty when the garden is “over” in late fall. Those who plant garlic, know that they don’t have to wait until late summer to enjoy the garlic…behold, garlic scapes.

Garlic scapes are the curly tops that shoot up out of garlic plants, typically during June (at least here in Connecticut). I feel like garlic scapes are one of the best kept secrets of avid gardeners. If there was a garlic scape club, I would be in it. It’s one of those things where if someone mentions eating garlic scapes, it’s almost like you’re speaking a special code word or a secret.

Garlic scapes are extremely spicy and garlicky when eaten raw. But once you cook it, it becomes very mild and it’s like eating asparagus with garlic but without the asparagusyness…

We planted 210 garlic plants, so we had basically 210 garlic scapes over the past month. Sounds like a lot, but in the great scheme of things, it’s just a little bit because after you chop them and cook them down, you realize it’s not that much. Stir-fried in olive oil and salt, you’ll want more.

Here are some photos taken of the June 20th harvest of garlic scapes!
